As search engines are concerned, we're reaping the rewards of good math on a daily basis through complicated algorithms that provide accurate results.

According to the math crowd, they're about to crank that benefit up a notch in the near future. A search war is looming that will see search engines emerge sporting fancy new algorithms that customize search results for each and every individual searcher.

That is, they will if mathematicians can overcome the personalization dilemma and develop search engines that deliver more relevant, customized search results based on our individual needs, interests and search patterns, rather than the group consensus approach taken by Google.

Google math
Google's reign as search engine king comes down to the success of its search algorithm. Developed by Stanford University PhD students turned Google co-founders Lawrence Page and Sergey Brin, Google uses crawlers to regularly trawl and index the entire Web, then rank each page according to a relevance-ranking algorithm. Now here comes the math.
