An IBM search guru is hired by YahooJuly 29, 2005 Yahoo announces it has hired Dr. Prabhakar Raghavan as head of its research and development division. Raghavan was senior vice president and chief technology officer at enterprise search firm Verity. Prior to Verity, he worked for 14 years in a variety of technical and managerial positions at IBM, including head of the Computer Science Principles and Methodologies department at IBM's Almaden Research Center. Yahoo said that Raghavan will lead research efforts in areas of search and information navigation, social media, community, personalisation and mobility. "My goal for Yahoo Research is to continue to attract top scientists from around the world to help discover new technologies that will enhance Yahoo services," said Raghavan. Raghavan is the co-author of a well known textbook on algorithms, Randomized Algorithms, and has published over 100 papers in various fields including algorithms, optimisation, web search and databases. He also holds over a dozen patents, including several on link analysis for web searching, and is a consulting professor of computer science at Stanford University. Raghavan has taught at Yale, and has been inducted as a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
