However, before doing anything to it, you should carefully read one of the many articles I wrote on the robots.txt protocol. In its most basic form, the robots.txt exclusion protocol was designed to prevent search engine robots (or spiders or crawlers) from indexing certain parts of websites that could contain information that should remain private.

Examples of this could be lists of names, addresses or phone numbers, or private records on people, etc. So if your robots.txt file was carelessly written, or if the person that wrote it wasn’t sure of the correct way of doing this, it can prevent your site from being indexed in some or all of the major search engines.

Correctly writing a robots.txt file takes only a few minutes in most cases, once you know the correct way of doing it. After reading the article I wrote, you should be able to do it yourself if you want. If you feel uncomfortable at doing this, just write back to me and we can do it for you for a very reasonable fee, usually under $ 50 for most ordinary sites.

The robots.txt file may seem like a very small and innocent file, but it can hide some very mysterious secrets if you don’t know where to look. Good luck.
