The Rank for $ales Weekly Newsletter, page 17(Continued) October 2, 2004 edition Google’s reasoning behind this is, the higher the number of inbould links ‘pointing’ to a website, the more valuable that site is, in which case it would deserve a higher ranking in its search results pages. If site ‘A’ links to site ‘B’, Google calculates this as a ‘vote’ for site B. The higher the number of votes, the higher the overall value for site ‘B’. In a perfect world, this would be true. Five techniques you should always do to push your site at the top of the search engine results pages and keep it there, and five things which you should always AVOID doing, to protect your site from a possible penalty or risk it from being banned altogether. Increasingly, we are getting more and more phone calls and emails asking us when will Google update its PR database or similar related questions. In an ongoing effort to better educate the public and the webmaster community, I've written this article which, it is hoped, will offer more light on the subject. Brand new websites that have been launched after the June 4, 2004 date still show up as PR 0 in the toolbar, meaning that Google has not updated its PR database since that time. Yet many of those same websites already show up in Google’s index, sometimes appearing on the first results page. Personally, I still think too many people are placing too much emphasis on the subject of PR (PageRank) and, from my ongoing analysis at the many changes to Google's algorithm done in the past 10 months, I seriously beleive that what really ranks a website higher in the search engines is not just PR, but rather a whole lot more elements than that. As I pointed out in my article, sure PR is important, and it still does matter, but there are also a lot more factors involved in the actual ranking of any given site, when compared to other competing websites in the same field. Of course, Google or any other search engine is not about to give their 'secret recipe' away to anybody, but by carefully following and analyzing what is currently happening in the search industry, one can better understand how to optimize a site. Well, that's it for today folks. Thanks for being here and have a great weekend! Serge Thibodeau.
