Still on Tuesday, in other developments, a DNS service outage at Akamai Technologies prevented access to some of the Internet's major Web sites Tuesday, including Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, according to the SANS Institute's Internet Storm Center.

The DNS (domain name system) servers that content hosting company Akamai uses to host DNS services for some customers stopped responding at around 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time in the U.S., leaving Web surfers who were trying to reach those sites high and dry, said Johannes Ullrich, chief technology officer at the Internet Storm Center.

Andy Ellis, Akamai's chief security architect, declined to comment, but did not deny that the Cambridge, Massachusetts, company was experiencing problems.

In news on Wednesday, a recent bloggers survey claims that blog readers are more mature and affluent than expected and more prone to click on ads and buy online. Many advertisers think bloggers, and blog readers inhabit some kind of cyber backwater, full of stagnant, egotistical, overwritten and overblown opinion pages, but no real advertising opportunities. This survey actually proved them wrong.
