Since I am relatively new to site design, what are these telling Google and can these things help me in my rankings? Again, thank you Serge.

Answer:
I'm really happy if you like our newsletter-- it is meant to help. The first piece of code you asked about, the "index,follow" tag has nothing to do with a page's high rankings in Google or any other search engine for that matter.

The "index,follow" tag is there to tell the search robots (all of them) that it is A-okay to index that page and then to follow all the links to the inner pages of the website.
