The claims against the Internet search engine that it allowed rival companies to buy ads using trademarked terms were dropped and the suit was turned down by the court, an attorney said Tuesday. Metaspinner took Google Deutschland to court in May, accusing it of selling ads triggered when users search for the company's "Preispiraten," or "Price Pirate," software, which lets users compare prices in online auctions and shops. Metaspinner argued that the practice allowed other companies to take advantage of their brand name. Google has been sued on similar grounds in France and the United States by different firms. Metaspinner Media attorney Petra Bosbach said the decision in Hamburg had gone against her client, but would not comment further. In news that happened Wednesday, it was reported that an input validation vulnerability in the Google Toolbar can cause various Internet security issues. A local user can execute arbitrary scripting code if he or she makes such an attempt. It was reported that the 'About' section of the Google Toolbar does not properly filter HTML code. A user can create HTML that, when loaded by the target user, will invoke the About page and execute arbitrary scripting code in the context of the page. Rafel Ivgi subsequently reported that the 'res:' protocol cannot be invoked from the Internet zone, preventing this flaw from being directly exploitable by remote users.
