The idea behind cloaking
When a search engine spider or human visitor requests a specific Web page, cloaking programs compare the IP address of the requesting party to a database of known IP addresses from specific search engine spiders. If the IP address matches one on the list, it serves a particular page that was specifically written for the search engines to the spider.

That page is normally optimized to rank well for that particular search engine, in order to achieve high visibility. However, if a human visitor would try to read that page, it would probably be very ugly and mostly unreadable, since, 9 times out of 10, it would be stuffed with useless keywords that cannot make a good (understandable) sentence.

You can find more reasons why you should always stay away from cloaking, by reading this article on search engine cloaking I wrote a while back. For me, cloaking isn't worth it. It's very time consuming, not to mention the high risks of getting caught by the search engines, and then getting penalized, or worse, having your website banned altogether. Don't do it.

Always practice "Safe SEO" and you will be happy you did.
